5 Reasons You Want Fiber Internet Service Right Now
2 commentsUpdated on May 16, 2023
You might be reading this because you’re one of the lucky ones who can choose whether to have fiber or traditional cable internet service. That doesn’t happen in every neighborhood.
In your neighborhood, you’re probably hearing that fiber is the way of the future. It solves your issues with internet speed and reliability. That’s true, and there are even more advantages that could be great for you, especially if you work from home or have a lot of users on your wi-fi at the same time.
Take a look at the best that you can expect from fiber:
1. Fast speeds
Fiber optics is the latest technology. All of the data you download and upload—everything you do online–is sent as pulsed beams of light through micro-thin fibers of plastic or glass. The fiber network travels right to your home.
You need a lot of speed the more you want to do online, particularly streaming and gaming. Do a quick calculation about what you do online, the number of users in your home, and you’ll quickly see why you want to have fiber.
Fiber also gives you a faster response time, which is also called lowered latency. So when you click on a page to load, fiber contributes to your results being twice as fast as regular cable.
You’re probably wondering if there’s a standard for the speed claims that ISPs make and deliver. Yes, there is. The FCC publishes reports based on the latest performance testing, and you can view the latest one here.
2. Matching speeds for downloads and uploads
Internet Service Providers usually talk about download speeds because that’s where most of the in-home internet has focused. Now that working and learning from home are the new norm, however, you have a need for faster uploads, too. Only fiber can deliver these symmetrical speeds.
These tasks need faster uploads:
- Video conferencing
- Sending large files
- Data and hard drive back-ups to cloud services
- Web hosting
- VoIP
- Only fiber can deliver these symmetrical speeds.
These tasks need faster downloads:
- Streaming video
- Video conferencing
- Multi-player gaming
- Downloading very large files
- Doing these all at the same time
3. Supports many users at once
If your home network is shared by several people in your home who all have at least 2 devices, then you will see a definite difference in using fiber internet. That fast connection allows multiple users to stream videos or play competitive games or upload videos and huge documents all at the same time.
Remember, any of your network of smart home devices that stay active to monitor security or regulate temperature or play your tunes, also add up.
4. Reliability
Fiber gives you service you can count on in a few different ways.
- It travels on a dedicated line, not sharing with any other kind of service
- It’s not likely to fail during a power outage
- It can withstand differences in temperatures
- It is not affected by water, including flooding
- It does not wear out over time
5. Positions you for the future
Just as with any home improvement upgrade, you want it to last. Fiber can continue to deliver for you over the years. That’s because fiber deployments are easy to scale up to 1 gig speeds. You’ve seen that internet speeds are being offered at faster and faster rates. Fiber sets you up for the future when speeds and your needs will inevitably increase.
Working from home, downloading documents, streaming more movies than ever, video conferencing, uploading data to the cloud, supporting multiple users and devices, have changed the game.
This is a job for fiber. This powerful technology can be exactly what you need to get it all done. Now make sure that your devices are updated and capable of delivering the high fiber speeds you’re bringing to your home.

I received an email saying I need a service upgrade. Is this real? if yes, what do I do?
Hello Ira. We did send emails intended for some of our customers in areas that we’ve completed our Fiber Optic expansion but who have service on our copper infrastructure. We also, and unfortunately, discovered that these were sent to some customers for which our Fiber is not yet available. Below you will see links to our Social Media pages where you can message us in private there and we can check for upgrade eligibility. ^Michael
