10 of the Best Home Improvement Shows To Stream Today

Comments 4 comments

Spending more time at home has motivated many of us to fix the shortcomings of our dwellings. It could be as simple as updating that paint color in your home office. Or maybe it’s finally time to ditch the tired carpeting and refinish your wood floors.

If you’ve got a project in mind, you’re not alone. More than 40% of consumers have put DIY home improvement plans on the calendar, according to NPD Group. While a quick Pinterest or Houzz search will turn up plenty of inspiration, rolling up your sleeves and bringing the look to life is easier when you see how others have lived through it.

Fortunately, there’s a home improvement show for every style that can provide you with inspiration and education. Here is a selection to stream:

If your style is farmhouse

“Fixer Upper: Welcome Home”

When Chip and Joanna Gaines’ show “Fixer Upper” launched on HGTV in 2013, the couple’s modern farmhouse style instantly clicked with homeowners across the country. After they called it quits in 2018, fans wanted more. Thankfully, the Gaines are back with “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home,” offering more of the design advice we fell in love with. The show will air on Gaines’ Magnolia Network, set to launch in 2022 (but now streaming with the Magnolia app). Until then, you can stream it on Discovery+.

If your style is traditional

“This Old House”

Before Chip and Joanna Gaines, Bob Vila ruled the home improvement circuit on the PBS-produced “This Old House.” In this series, which premiered in 1979 and is now in season 42, you’ll find homes of various sizes and styles to help inspire your own renovation. The common thread is that they’re usually old and brought up to date inside and out.

If your style is bright and modern

“Property Brothers”

Tune in to brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott as they help people find and buy the perfect house and transform it into their dream home. The duo creates designs to fit the homeowners’ lifestyle, but they aren’t afraid to nudge them into taking some risks. The results always increase the value of the property.

If your style is eclectic

“Trading Spaces”

The premise of “Trading Spaces” is that two sets of neighbors redecorate a room in each other’s homes with a $2,000 budget and the help of a professional designer. It originally aired on TLC more than two decades ago, then took a decade-long break, relaunching in 2018. This show offers lots of DIY inspiration, as you watch nonprofessionals tackle projects. Each room usually includes a made-from-scratch project, with the help of a handyman.

If your style is sophisticated

“Nate & Jeremiah by Design”

Nate Berkus rose to celebrity designer status when he appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Today, he and his husband, Jeremiah Brent, star in “Nate & Jeremiah by Design.” The designers help stressed-out homeowners who are stuck in the midst of a renovation. Nate and Jeremiah come to the rescue, solving their design problems and delivering results that usually leave the owners speechless.

If your style is budget-conscious but beautiful

“Flip or Flop”

Flipping houses requires an ability to see past what’s there and envision what’s possible. On “Flip or Flop,” former husband and wife Tarek El Moussa and Christina Haack find the worst home in the best neighborhood, then renovate and sell it. The couple divorced in 2017, but they continue to do the show together. As maximizing profits is key for flipping success, viewers get tips on where to save without sacrificing style.

If your style is modern rustic

“Dream Home Makeover”

Everyone deserves to live in their dream home, and that’s the goal of Shea and Syd McGee, husband and wife stars of the Netflix series “Dream Home Makeover.” The show brings their approachable design tips and modern rustic style to life. Shea is the brains behind the design, and Syd helps project manage (and keep things light). With two seasons to stream, you’ll find ideas for different renovation budgets.

If your style is crafty

“Home Town”

Set in the small southern city of Laurel, MI, “Home Town” features couple Erin and Ben Napier, who are on a mission to transform their entire home town, renovating old houses and upcycling items into home furnishings and décor wherever they can. If you tend to be crafty, you’ll find plenty of inspiration for your own DIY projects. They also create gorgeous indoor/outdoor spaces for homeowners to enjoy.

If your style is minimalistic

“Life Uncontained”

You may have heard of container homes, but have you ever wondered how those large crates go from shipping boxes to beautiful dwellings? “Life Uncontained” follows DIY couple Mackenzie and Spenser, who decided to go off the grid, move to Texas and create their dream home out of two large shipping containers. Unlike many design shows that complete a transformation in days, “Life Uncontained” is a work in progress. The couple has been on a three-year journey—and it’s not done quite yet.

If your style is casual

“Good Bones”

Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak are a mother/daughter team of rehabbers who work their magic on neglected houses in their hometown of Indianapolis. Their show, “Good Bones,” aims to honor the history and character of each home, while adapting them for a modern lifestyle. You’ll find plenty of inspiration for DIY projects that preserve or repurpose a home’s original features, such as restoring ornate woodwork or transforming old windows into a custom china cabinet.

Where to watch: HGTV

So pop some popcorn, grab a sketch pad and settle in for some renovation inspiration. You may find the perfect solution to your design dilemma waiting for you in one of these fun and informative shows.
