In 2023, players enjoyed some of the best game sequels in years, and 2024 is poised to deliver even more. Great sequels have been a mainstay of the video game industry dating back to the 8-bit era. Developers, naturally, want to follow up on the success of earlier hits, and gamers are always clamoring for more of the franchises they love. “Grand Theft Auto V,” the highest-selling sequel and second-highest-selling game of all time, is proof enough.

The Game Awards 2023 showed that making great sequels is a major focus in the industry. The winners in the top categories, “Baldur’s Gate 3” and “Alan Wake 2,” are terrific sequels. Furthermore, all candidates for Game of the Year were sequels (or a remake of a sequel in the case of “Resident Evil 4”).

“Baldur’s Gate 3“

You’re likely aware that “Baldur’s Gate 3” was a massive hit. It cleaned up at The Game Awards, winning multiple categories and taking the crown as Game of the Year. It was a long time coming, too, with “Baldur’s Gate II” launching in 2000.

“Alan Wake 2”

“Alan Wake 2” is one of those smash hits that few were expecting. A sequel to the 2010 original, “Alan Wake 2” combines psychological thriller and survival horror elements. The result is a unique experience, to say the least. Alan Wake, the titular character, has been trapped in an alternate universe since the events of the first game. The story is an absolute ride, but we won’t spoil anything here.

The game’s twisting plot, supernatural world-building and wacky humor are a fascinating blend. Unsurprisingly, “Alan Wake 2” became Remedy’s fastest-selling game ever. It’s outpaced the studio’s “Max Payne“ titles, cementing itself among the top sequels of 2023.

“The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”

No list of the greatest sequels ever made is complete without “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.” This ambitious follow-up is a direct sequel to 2017’s “Breath of the Wild.” Expectations were high, given how bold the first game was, and “Tears of the Kingdom” met them. The game expands the vast open world, while introducing new mechanics, such as a brilliant crafting system.

Customization options for the player’s mech add layers of strategic flexibility.

While a massive departure from the “Souls” series, “Armored Core VI” was a clear hit with fans. It quickly became the highest-selling title in the series and one of the most popular sequels of 2023.
